PREVENTION
Some tips that may help you to prevent or minimize your risk of a concussion include:
-
Wear protective gear during sports and other recreational activities.
Always use the appropriate gear for any sport you or your child undertakes--such as bike helmets, football helmet, etc.) . Make sure the equipment fits properly and is worn correctly.
-
Buckle your seat belt.
Wearing a seat belt may prevent serious injury such as a head injury during a traffic accident.
-
Make your home safe.
Keep your home and your floors free of anything that might cause you to trip and fall. Uneven floors or wet floors could lead to falls as well. Falls around the home are a leading cause of head injury. Child proof your home if you have small children to prevent any injuries.
-
Raise awarness and educate parents, coaches, and players about concussions
Talk to athletes, parents, and coaches about the dangers of concussions and potential long-term effects of a concussion to raise awareness. Also re-enforce expectations of safe play.
